How to Cook Whole Lobster
Lobster can be intimidating, but did you know it;s one of the easiest things to cook and when prepared at home it’s not nearly as expensive as you might think. Certainly not cheap, but nothing like a restaurant lobster meal.
My mom grew up in Maine, so I’ve ben eating home-cooked lobster my whole life and I’m here to tell you, that you need to try it (at least once) at home.
Whole Lobster:
Lobster
Large Stockpot
Salt
Butter
Shell Crackers
You can get lobster from most local grocery stores. In the deli. They will be alive in a tank. You want them to be alive when you boil them. They will stay alive for quite awhile, but keep them cool on ice until you are ready to cook them.
Boil a large stock pot of salty water. Once boiling, drop the live lobster into the water. Depending on the size of your stockpot, you may be able to cook 2-3 lobsters at a time. Boil for about 8-10 minutes or until lobster is bright red and floats to the top.
Serve with melted butter.
*Tips for serving with kids. I pull apart all the main pieces; arms, claws, legs, body, tail. Let them try their hand cracking the claws and sucking out the meat from the legs. Help with the tail and I usually pick the body myself to use for lobster rolls.
